There are over 22,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Minnesota, with over 21,000 miles maintained by local snowmobile club volunteers. When snow conditions allow. It is popular recreational activity in Minnesota and you will see it everywhere in the winter – along the sides of highways and across frozen lakes!
ICE FISHING
Never tried ice fishing? Don’t let fanatics, winter weather or the mind-boggling array of gear intimidate you. At its roots, ice fishing ranks among the more basic outdoor sports and can accommodate any skill level. Considering you don’t need a boat to get on the water, winter fishing can be more accessible, too. Ice fishing is as basic as drilling a large hole through the ice of a frozen lake (which can be up to 2 meters thick) until you can see open water.
ICE SKATING
Whether you want to practice your Flying V or polish your toe pick, Minnesota’s outdoor ice skating rinks are the perfect surface for winter fun. Winter is a good time to get outdoors for both physical and mental well-being. Minnesota’s winters can feel long, but the frequent bursts of arctic air and snowfall from January through March don’t deter the people from the Twin Cities from getting outside for some good, old-fashioned ice skating.
KITE FESTIVAL
Celebrate winter at the Minneapolis Winter Kite Festival at Lake Harriet. Kites of all shapes, sizes, colors and themes will fly over frozen Lake Harriet in a fun family festival. The Kite Festival is a FREE outdoor event for people of all ages and abilities. The festival is organized by Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board in partnership with Linden Hills Neighborhood Council and East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association. You can bring your own kite or buy one there. Enjoy music, ice-fishing lessons from Tips Outdoors and a free marshmallow roast.
Ice Castles
Ice Castles is an awe-inspiring, must-see winter wonderland that brings fairy tales to life, and this winter you can experience it all in downtown Maple Grove! With ice castles, tunnels, slides and palaces cropping up all around the Twin Cities, it’s clear that they’re a highly anticipated winter spectacle. Ice Castles brings fun in the form of caverns, towers, fountains, and slides to Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton
