yearly summer picnic
summer picnic
Each year, our association eagerly anticipates the summer picnic, a cherished tradition where we come together to celebrate our vibrant Ghanaian culture. It is a day filled with joy, unity, and the rich flavors of our homeland, where both children and adults immerse themselves in the lively spirit of Ghana.
The picnic grounds buzz with excitement as families arrive, their laughter mingling with the melodious strains of highlife music. Colorful Ghanaian kente cloths and flags adorn the area, creating a festive atmosphere that instantly transports us to the heart of Ghana. The air is fragrant with the tantalizing aromas of traditional dishes being prepared, promising a feast that will delight everyone.
Tables groan under the weight of Ghanaian culinary delights. There are heaping bowls of jollof rice, its rich tomato flavor perfectly spiced, alongside plates of succulent grilled tilapia and fried plantains. Aunties and uncles proudly serve homemade waakye, kenkey, and banku, accompanied by spicy pepper sauce and flavorful shito. For dessert, there are sweet treats like bofrot (Ghanaian doughnuts) and kelewele, spicy fried plantain chunks that are a crowd favorite.
As everyone indulges in the delicious food, the children’s laughter rings out from the games area. They eagerly participate in traditional Ghanaian games like ampe, a clapping and jumping game that tests agility and coordination, and oware, a strategic board game that has been passed down through generations. The adults join in too, reminiscing about their own childhoods as they teach the younger ones the rules and strategies of these timeless games. Nearby, a group engages in a lively game of ludu, a Ghanaian version of Ludo, their competitive spirits adding to the day’s excitement.
The annual summer picnic is more than just a gathering; it is a celebration of our shared identity and a reaffirmation of the bonds that connect us. It is a day where we honor our traditions, savor our favorite foods, and create lasting memories. As we bid farewell and look forward to the next year, our hearts are full, and our spirits are lifted, knowing that our Ghanaian heritage continues to thrive within our community here in Minnesota.
